Swift Mobile Warehouse
& Shop Floor Automation

Summary

UCC Coffee ANZ — a premier coffee company operating across Australia and New Zealand with a rich local roasting heritage — has heavily invested in manufacturing automation to support its regional footprint. Its shop floor teams now complete a manufacturing work order by scanning a single GS1 barcode and entering a Best Before Date, with Swift processing the work order completion, material issues, and routing operations in JD Edwards automatically in the background. Paper-based warehouse records have been replaced by real-time transactions captured at the point of activity.

The Challenge

UCC Coffee ANZ operates a vast regional coffee roasting and distribution network, supplying fresh coffee and equipment across a portfolio of iconic local brands like Toby's Estate, Robert Harris, and Mocopan. That scale and reach make lot-level accuracy a requirement rather than an aspiration: a business that tracks coffee from its roasting facilities to the final cup has to be able to answer questions about a specific batch, quickly and with confidence.

Warehouse records for stock including machines and coffee were being kept on paper. Shop floor teams recorded manufacturing completions and stock movements manually, and those records then had to make their way into JD Edwards through a separate step.

The consequences were the familiar ones for a paper-based shop floor. Work order completion was a multi-step manual task rather than a scan. Material issues and routing operations had to be handled as separate transactions. Lot-level attributes such as Best Before Date depended on someone writing them down correctly. And because JD Edwards was only updated once records caught up, inventory visibility lagged behind physical reality — a real exposure for a business built on traceability.

The Solution

UCC Coffee ANZ deployed Swift's mobile warehouse and shop floor apps on handheld scanners, integrated directly with JD Edwards, so that shop floor transactions are captured where they happen and post to the ERP in real time.

The defining change is at manufacturing completion. Rather than working through a sequence of separate transactions, an operator scans the work order's GS1 barcode and enters the Best Before Date. Swift then processes the work order completion, the associated material issues, and the routing operations in JD Edwards simultaneously, in the background. What was a multi-step manual process became a single scan plus one data entry.

Apps deployed

Manufacturing Completion

Complete a work order by scanning its GS1 barcode and entering the Best Before Date, with material issues and routing operations processed automatically in JD Edwards

Inventory Putaway (Location Transfer)

Location-to-location inventory transfers performed directly from the handheld scanner as stock is physically moved

Because BBD is captured at the point of completion and tied to the work order, lot traceability is established as part of the production transaction rather than reconstructed from records afterwards.

The Results

Manufacturing work order completion reduced to a single GS1 barcode scan plus Best Before Date entry

Work order completions, material issues, and routing operations processed together in JD Edwards automatically, rather than as separate manual transactions

Paper-based warehouse records replaced with transactions captured at the point of activity

Inventory putaway performed directly from handheld scanners, with JD Edwards reflecting movements in real time

Lot traceability strengthened through Best Before Date capture at the point of production completion

Manual data entry eliminated from shop floor transactions, removing a source of recording error

Turn a multi-step work order completion into a single scan
